Sweet potato chocolate mousse. Dairy free, gluten free and vegan friendly, this healthier chocolate mousse recipe is gently sweetened with a little brown rice syrup (or you can use another natural liquid sweetener, too). A delicious real food dessert that’s super easy to prepare!
Sweet potato chocolate mousse trumps traditional chocolate mousse in every way. It’s easier to make, better for you and very food-intolerance friendly. Sweet potato makes the perfect base for a dessert. It has a natural sweet flavour that requires little enhancement from any other sweetener. There’s only a small amount of sweetener added to this recipe. (And it can be kept lower in fructose by sticking to rice malt syrup for the sweetener.)
To make this recipe, I recommend steaming the sweet potato because it retains more moisture compared to roasting. I think this produces a softer, more mousse-like texture. However, if you do have some leftover roasted sweet potato then I think you could still give this a try! You may need to just add a little extra coconut milk to help with the blending.
I hope you enjoy this simple recipe for Sweet Potato Chocolate Mousse. It’s just so easy to make but has such a luxurious taste, I just love it. Simply indulgent, with real food, natural ingredients. And, a small serve is very satisfying, you won’t be able to eat a huge amount at once!
Sweet Potato Chocolate Mousse
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups sweet potato, peeled and diced (approximately 350 grams)
- 1/2 - 3/4 cup coconut milk full-fat
- 4-5 tbsp cacao powder or unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3 tbsp rice malt syrup or any other liquid sweetener e.g. honey, maple syrup, coconut syrup, etc.
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Steam the sweet potato until soft. Allow to cool to room temperature.
- Place sweet potato, cacao, rice malt syrup, vanilla and 1/2 cup of coconut milk into your food process or blender and process until smooth. Add an extra 1/4 cup coconut milk if needed until the mousse is a good consistency (it will thicken a little as it cools). I also recommend starting with 4 tablespoons of cacao powder, and then adding a tablespoon more if you want a deeper chocolate flavour.
- Scoop the mousse into a storage container and place in the fridge to cool. Note, the mousse will thicken a little as it cools.
- Serve the mousse cold, topped with fresh fruit, nuts, seeds or anything you like really!

Do you think this would freeze as a healthy alternative to chocolate ice cream? X
Gui
I made it the minute I saw the recipe and it was the easiest and most delicious mousse! Thank you for sharing! I am totally agree that sweet potatoes are suitable for so many different kind of meals and also a very healthy choice (low at carbs).

So delicious. I freeze it and eat as Ice-cream. I used carob and Swerve for the sweetener (1/2 Tbs). Mmmm. So good. Have you tried to make this in other flavors that worked out well? I tried just plain with a little cinnamon but tastes like sweet potato ice cream. Haha.
Monique
Yum it’s so good with carob isn’t it! I haven’t been too experimental with the recipe though I have added a shot of espresso before 🙂

Mine tastes almost identical to chocolate pudding? I used a non-alkalized. Giradelli cocoa powder and 4 Tbs may have overwhelmed the flavor profile. It’s good vegan chocolate pudding, but I was looking forward to the sweet potato flavors….

Just tried this with acorn squash instead of sweet potatoes and it was FABULOUS! Thank you for the recipe!
Monique
Aw thank you so much! Great to know it works with squash too as I have a lot of that right now! 🙂

Thank you for this recipe! I recently tried sweet potato chocolate mousse at a restaurant and while I immediately wanted to make it at home, I didn’t realize it could be this easy.
One question: there are so many varieties of sweet potatoes. Do you find that a particular variety works better than others in achieving that smooth texture?
Monique
Hi Lauren, thank you for your message! That’s the best thing about sweet potato mousse, it is so easy! In terms of which sweet potatoes work best, I just use the standard supermarket gold sweet potatoes (which have a golden-orange skin and a deep orange coloured flesh). I think the most commonly grown gold sweet potato is called the beauregard but there are also garnet and jewel varieties. 🙂
Anna
I have an intolerance to all things coconut, particularly coconut milk. Have you tried with any other milk types? I was thinking rice milk because it’s sweeter but it is quite thin in consistency.
Monique
Hi Anna, I haven’t tried this with another milk yet unfortunately. While I think rice milk may have the right sweetness, what it’s probably lacking is enough fat to give you the richness required for a mousse. Rice milk is mainly water. Are you intolerant to dairy? Honestly, probably the best substitute is to use half cream/half milk and then adjust the amount of sweetener you need. If you cannot have dairy you could possibly use rice milk but will need to add a fat source too. A non-dairy condensed milk would be ideal.

Thank you so much for this recipe! I am organizing a training and one attendee said she was vegan and I’ve been wrecking my brain on what to give her for dessert that she would enjoy and feel special and not left out. I think this mousse will be so easy to make and simply delicious. Forgive my silly question but if I add chocolate protein powder, would it still be vegan? Or should I just stick to cacao? And could you tell me more about the rose petals and where I might obtain them?
Monique
Hi Catherine, thank you so much for your lovely comment 🙂 This is definitely a very easy mousse to make. You can keep it vegan and add chocolate protein powder, so long as the protein powder is a plant-based one e.g. brown rice protein, hemp protein, pea protein. These would all be suitable types. Most powders should indicate whether they are vegan suitable or not.
Regarding the rose petals, I am not sure where you are based but I often find these in local gourmet delis. Sometimes, supermarkets have them in little packets in the baking aisle, if you’re lucky!
Danielle
This is so much fun, and such a great, lighter take on an indulgent dessert. And those dried rose leaves are so, so pretty.
Monique
Thanks so much Danielle 🙂 I know, the rose petals just make it so pretty right!
